Human Rights Commission · Meeting of July 2, 2026

WATERTOWN — The Watertown Human Rights Commission voted unanimously to adopt a statement responding to the Supreme Court's temporary protected status ruling. Commissioner Corey Barr told the panel that five vehicles believed to be ICE circled West Watertown streets for about three hours Saturday before detaining a resident, with a second detention reported that day on Cuba Street. Barr cited a New York Times report of roughly 10,000 arrests nationwide in five days.

The commission modeled its new statement on one issued by the Cambridge City Council, pledging solidarity with "our Haitian and Syrian neighbors." Separately, commissioners Sarah Zahn and Mel Poindexter said they are working through a non-anonymous complaint received June 22 "in relation to education and access to city services," with no commissioner yet volunteering to serve as liaison; the matter returns to the full commission July 13.
