Human Rights Commission · Meeting of July 13, 2026
Watertown's Human Rights Commission learned police did not initially know immigration agents had detained four residents over a four- to five-day period, not two as first believed. Captain Unsworth, the Watertown Police Department's liaison to the commission, said "I didn't know we had four people taken into custody in just those few days," and confirmed the department refused an ICE request to use a department facility, saying "we said, no, clearly we cannot by law." Co-chair Mel Poindexter raised the discrepancy during the July 13 meeting. Commissioners approved minutes from June 17 and July 2 by unanimous roll call and adopted a new complaint-intake process modeled on the Commission on Disability, naming commissioner Liz Ashelman as first point of contact for a pending special-education-related complaint after three commissioners recused themselves.
Director of Human Services Jenna Bancroft reported about $5,440 available toward the commission's $6,000 fiscal 2027 allocation.
