School Committee · Meeting of October 14, 2026

WATERTOWN — The Watertown Public Schools Policy Subcommittee voted unanimously to advance an immigration/ICE preparedness policy and a revised voting-procedures policy to the full School Committee. The Superintendent told members the district's new policy, built from a Massachusetts Association of School Committees template tied to Governor Maura Healey's late-August directive, mostly formalizes practices already in place, including emergency preparedness packets sent to every family in roughly 20 languages. Members also approved revised language on policy BEDF clarifying that abstaining members still count toward quorum even though their abstentions are "not counted as a vote cast." The change followed feedback this week from a reviewer named only as Colby and resolved a prior disputed vote that, members said, "according to both the Robert's AI... parliamentarian, and our lawyer," should have passed.

Both measures now head to the full School Committee for a first reading; no date was set.
