School Committee · Meeting of October 19, 2026

Watertown School Committee heard an MCAS data presentation showing uneven gains while parents pressed leaders on special education transparency and a stalled director search. Of 1,548 students tested in 2026, 47 percent were classified high-needs; Dr. Pena presented results topping the state average in most subjects except combined high school science, which fell 9 percentage points to 38 percent.

Resident Suzanne Brueggemann said "families want to believe the district is committed to improving special education, but there is a genuine concern that its public rhetoric does not align with its actions." Resident Jocelyn Taker alleged the chair wrongly denied a June no-confidence vote recorded as "two yeses, zero nos, and five abstentions." The committee also approved an eighth-grade Washington, D.C. trip costing about $950 per student and the FY28 budget calendar, both unanimously, while separately learning the Watertown City Council voted to proceed with the middle school rebuild.
