WATERTOWN — A Watertown council committee continued its review of a rewritten demolition delay ordinance. City Manager George Paracas walked the Committee on Economic Development and Planning through the draft, which would create one definition of demolition and exempt buildings under 50 years old, affordable housing developments, city-owned buildings and the local historic district. Councilors asked for clearer "relevant permit" timing language, a single definition of "public hearing" and a staff memo on demolition by neglect.
Elise Lucas, identified as Historical Commission chair, reported 80 applications through April 7, with 27 public hearings and seven delays imposed. Resident Marilyn Roach warned that exemptions amounted to "putting a target on the back" of historic buildings. The committee voted to continue the matter.
