Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee · Meeting of September 14, 2026

Watertown's Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee voted unanimously to seek a City Council meeting on sidewalk snow-clearance enforcement. Members reviewed an August city debrief showing DPW cleared 17 miles of sidewalk last winter with only five in-house plows, drawing roughly 280 distinct complaint locations out of up to 400 total reports. Fines run about $200 per ticket, but members said repeat violators, mainly commercial properties on Arsenal Street, "have infinite money to keep paying these tickets" rather than clear snow.

Committee member Hannah questioned whether the shortfall was a staffing or equipment problem, while Jamie said DPW still treats "the road is more important than the sidewalk." The committee also voted to pursue closer coordination with the Traffic Commission and named member Jenny point person on exploring a Mass Central Rail Trail connection into Watertown.
